The Reserve 2005 is similar in style to other reserve wines coming from La Rosa. It is very expressive with plenty of concentration and complexity. 2005 enabled us to make delicate wines with good equilibrium. Aided by the time in barriques, the wine is very aromatic with dark, berry fruit flavours and a touch of blackberry and bramble. The wine can be drunk now but also has enormous potential for ageing.
Grape Varieties:
The La Rosa Reserve 2005 is a blend of different grape varieties. 34% came from old vineyards with mixed planting and the remainder came from younger vineyards with block planting – 56% Touriga Nacional and 10% Tinto Cão
Production notes:
2005 was a very dry year and, at the beginning of September, the grapes showed little concentration although they were apparently very ripe. The rain arrived just in time, during the first week of September, whilst we were preparing to pick which delayed the vintage by two weeks. This delay was ideal as it enabled the grapes to develop aromas and concentration that had been lacking before. As a result, 2005 is an excellent year with balance and equilibrium
Maturation and Bottling:
Most of the grapes were trodden in temperature controlled granite lagares; the rest were pumped over in small stainless steel vats. The wine was matured in Allier French oak casks for 16 months before being bottled in May 2007.
Serving Suggestions:
The wine would be best served with red meats and more powerful dishes. It also goes well with cheese, especially the Serra cheese found in Portugal.
